The 19th century fashion was marked by two main styles: Romantic and Empire. The Empire style, popular at the beginning of the century, was characterized by its simple silhouettes and raised waists just below the bust, inspired by classical Greek and Roman fashion. Dresses were made of light fabrics, such as muslin and silk, and often carried minimal decorations to highlight the purity of form.
In contrast, the Romantic fashion, which gained popularity around the 1820s, focused on accentuating the female figure with tight waists and wide skirts supported by crinolines or hoop skirts. This era saw the return of voluminous sleeves, lace, embroidery, and a greater richness in fabrics. .
Women’s Romantic style featured cinched waists and full skirts to accentuate femininity, while the Victorian era introduced intricate dresses with tight bodices and expansive bustles.
