The long-awaited four-part biopic about Vigdís Finnbogadóttir, Iceland’s iconic former president and the world’s first democratically elected female head of state, will have its premiere on 17 February at the Berlinale Series Market Selects, thanks to REinvent International.
The series, which follows Finnbogadóttir’s life from 1948 until her historic election in 1980, has been a resounding success in Iceland since its premiere on public television RÚV on 1 January. With a cumulative audience of 60% per episode, it has become one of the most watched productions in the country.
‘It is one of Iceland’s most successful TV series,‘ says producer Rakel Garðarsdóttir, who created the project together with Ágústa M Ólafsdóttir and Björg Magnúsdóttir (’The Minister”). The series highlights Finnbogadóttir’s legacy as a strong advocate for equality and women’s rights during her term of office (1980-1996).

Filming took place entirely in Iceland, including scenes set in Scandinavia and France, taking advantage of the talents of the local crew. In addition, to ensure authenticity in the costumes, the creators were supported by Icelandic citizens, who donated period clothing. Even Vigdís Finnbogadóttir herself lent original garments, adding a genuine touch to the production. At Peris Costumes we are happy to be part of this project.
The premiere of ‘Vigdís’ at Berlinale reinforces its impact on the international scene and highlights Iceland’s commitment to the representation of female historical figures who marked a before and after in world politics.
