“Stella. A Life” by Kilian Riedhof premiered at the Zurich Film Festival

“Stella. A Life” tells the tragic story of Stella Goldschlag, a young Jewish girl from Berlin who, in order to survive, cooperates with the Gestapo by betraying other Jews. Based on true events, Stella dreams of a career as a jazz singer. Despite all the repressive measures, she is forced to go into hiding with her parents in 1944 and her life becomes a real tragedy.

Costume designer: Thomas Oláh

The film stars Paula Beer, who won the best actress awards at the Berlin Film Festival and the European Film Awards for “Undine” in 2020, as well as the best young actor or actress award at Venice in 2016 for “Frantz.”

Riedhof first came across Goldschlag’s story some 20 years ago in a newspaper: “The photo of a blonde, beautiful, very lively woman on Kurfürstendamm in the middle of Berlin: to me she was a very modern woman.” I learned that she was also a victim, that she was persecuted by the Nazis, that she was tortured and threatened with deportation to Auschwitz together with her family.
