Costume designer Mercè Paloma has been awarded the 2026 Gaudí Award for Best Costume Design for her extraordinary work on the film Frontera.
Directed by Judith Colell and written by Miguel Ibáñez Monroy and Gerard Giménez, the film engages in a profound dialogue with our present. “Now there are also people fleeing war, genocide, hunger… to come to places where their lives are not in danger,” says Colell, referring to this exciting historical thriller inspired by real events.
Set in 1943, when Franco and Hitler had closed the border between Spain and occupied France, Frontera tells the story of the inhabitants of a village in the Pallars region who risked their own lives to help persecuted Jews cross the border to freedom.
The film, starring Miki Esparbé, Maria Rodríguez Soto, and Asier Etxeandia, stands out for its dramatic intensity and careful historical recreation, in which the costumes play a fundamental role.
Mercè Paloma’s work brings authenticity, sensitivity, and rigor to the narrative, using the costumes to construct an emotional dimension that connects the past and the present.
Congratulations on this well-deserved recognition!
