One of the most performed operas in the history of music has once again thrilled audiences in Madrid. Tosca, Giacomo Puccini’s masterpiece, premiered at the Auditorio Nacional de Música, reaffirming the dramatic power and relevance of this essential work in the operatic repertoire.
Originally premiered on January 14, 1900, at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome, with a libretto by Luigi Illica and Giuseppe Giacosa, the work is based on the intense drama La Tosca by French author Victorien Sardou, presented in Paris in 1887 and popularized by the legendary actress Sarah Bernhardt.
Considered one of the pinnacles of Italian verismo, Tosca combines love, political intrigue, violence, passion, and death in a score that contains some of the most beautiful and recognizable arias in the operatic repertoire. Along with Madama Butterfly and La Bohème, it is one of Puccini’s three most famous operas.
For this new production, the costumes—a fundamental part of the aesthetic and narrative construction of the show—were designed by costume designer Ana Ramos.
At Peris Costumes, we are proud to have been part of this project, contributing our experience to a production of great dramatic intensity.
The opera proves once again that the great classics are still alive when tradition, artistic excellence, and craftsmanship come together on stage.
