Madrid Carnival 2026 has officially begun with a major public celebration, transforming the city into a large open-air spectacle. Thousands of people gathered around Madrid Río and Plaza Matadero for a day defined by community participation, cultural diversity, and artistic creativity, featuring international troupes, street theatre, and performances for all audiences.
The official opening speech was delivered by Madrid-born illusionist Jorge Blass, who kicked off the festivities with an energetic and inspiring message. He invited citizens to join what he described as “a collective spell of joy,” stating that “Madrid has decided to make magic,” and encouraging everyone to turn the streets into stages and the public into the true protagonists of the celebration. With his characteristic humor, he portrayed himself as a version of Groucho Marx “with less cigar and more illusion,” adding that during carnival, “if something impossible happens, it’s not a trick — it’s Madrid.”
The event was attended by the Delegate for Culture, Tourism and Sport, Marta Rivera de la Cruz, who joined the town crier for the official launch of the program.
For this year’s carnival opening, Peris Costumes dressed both Jorge Blass and Marta Rivera de la Cruz, contributing its extensive expertise in costume design and rental for major cultural events. Their collaboration highlights the importance of costume in shaping the visual identity and theatrical spirit of large-scale public celebrations.
