Sandy Powell, one of the film industry’s most influential costume designers, presents her first exhibition in the United States: Sandy Powell’s Dressing the Part: Costume Design for Film, at the SCAD Museum in Atlanta.
A recipient of the prestigious BAFTA Fellowship and three Oscars, Powell has left an indelible mark on the world of film over four decades. His talent and creativity have brought unforgettable characters to life in collaborations with directors such as Martin Scorsese, Todd Haynes and Neil Jordan, as well as renowned actresses such as Cate Blanchett, Kirsten Dunst and more.
This unique exhibition immerses visitors in Powell’s universe through a series of vignettes featuring more than 70 costumes from nearly 30 iconic films, including Shakespeare in Love, The Wolf of Wall Street and How to Talk to Girls at Parties. Across genres, eras and styles, the exhibition highlights Powell’s mastery of creating cinematic worlds through costume.

Curated by Rafael Gomes, Creative Director of SCAD FASH, the exhibition is a tribute to Powell’s extraordinary career and her ability to transform costume into an essential narrative tool.
About the artist
From childhood, Sandy Powell had a fascination with fashion, learning to sew and making clothes for her dolls. Her love of design and visual storytelling led her to work in theatre with choreographer Lindsay Kemp and, later, into the film industry with Caravaggio (1986), her first film with Derek Jarman.
Throughout her career, she has designed costumes for over 50 films, from major Hollywood productions such as Cinderella and Mary Poppins Returns to period films such as The Young Victoria and The Favourite, as well as independent projects such as Velvet Goldmine and Living. Her talent has been recognized with numerous awards, including three BAFTAs and three Oscars. In 2011, Powell was awarded the title of Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE).
Don’t miss this opportunity to explore the work of one of the great costume designers of our time. Sandy Powell’s Dressing the Part will be on view through March 2025 at the SCAD Museum in Atlanta.
