Arantxa Ezquerro, nominated for a Goya 2025 Award for the costumes of La virgen roja

Costume designer Arantxa Ezquerro has been nominated for the Goya 2025 Award for Best Costume Design for her exceptional work on La virgen roja, the new film by director Paula Ortiz. With more than two decades of experience in the world of costume design for film, theatre, television and advertising, Ezquerro once again stands out with a meticulous design that combines historical research, creativity and a deep knowledge of visual narrative.

The challenge of La virgen roja was no small one: to design and coordinate the costumes for more than 2,200 characters, including actors and extras, with a team of 12 professionals that grew to 20 at times of heavy workload. The designer, who has collaborated with Paula Ortiz in all her films, was inspired by the women of the Bauhaus to define the chromatic palette and the aesthetics of the film, achieving a visually striking and meaningful setting.

A design process based on research and history

For the creation of the wardrobe, Ezquerro carried out an exhaustive process of documentation in museums, historical archives and paintings of the period, understanding that the fashion of a period is a direct reflection of its social and cultural context. Although today’s internet facilitates access to much information, the designer stresses the importance of going to primary sources and exploring original artistic references for inspiration and discovering details that may go unnoticed in digital research.

‘The colour, textures and shapes we find in paintings are essential to define the costume of a period film. Often, a walk through a museum refreshes your memory and helps you to link ideas that you had forgotten’, Ezquerro explains.

The craftsmanship behind the costumes

The costume design for La virgen roja required the collaboration of several specialised workshops and craftsmen who made it possible to make each piece with historical accuracy and precision in the details. Ezquerro points out that, although he has sewing skills, the volume of work and the complexity of the production required delegating the execution to expert hands, thus ensuring an impeccable finish to each garment.

At Peris Costumes, we are proud to have contributed to this ambitious project by providing pieces and materials that helped bring Arantxa Ezquerro’s artistic vision to life. Her talent and dedication to costume design have been key to the construction of the visual universe of La virgen roja, consolidating her place as one of the great costume designers of Spanish cinema.

We wish her every success at the Goya Awards gala and celebrate her work as an example of excellence in costume design.

📅 The Goya Awards Gala will be held on 8th February 2025.
