Amazon Prime Video has confirmed the cancellation of The Wheel of Time, one of its most ambitious fantasy productions. The series, starring Rosamund Pike and based on the novels by Robert Jordan, will not continue after its third season, surprising the followers of this medieval story.
We have had the privilege of collaborating on all three seasons of the series, working closely with costume designer Sharon Gilham to bring to life a universe rich in unique cultures, textures and styles.
Despite having had creative recognition from the platform, the high production costs -characteristic of large-scale fantasy series- have been determinant in the decision not to renew it. The progressive drop in viewership has also been a key factor. During its third season, The Wheel of Time dropped out of the Nielsen Top 10 originals after the first three weeks, although it managed to return to tenth place with its final episode.
The cancellation underscores one of the most important challenges currently facing the streaming entertainment industry: finding a sustainable balance between creative ambition, production costs and return on investment.
Beyond its ending, The Wheel of Time leaves a mark in the history of Amazon Prime Video, not only for having paved the way for other productions such as The Rings of Power, but also for demonstrating the potential of adapting complex literary sagas to the screen.
